History of Pandemics
There have been three influenza pandemics in the last century:
1918-1919 Spanish flu. Most severe, caused an estimated 500,000 U.S. deaths and up to 40 million deaths worldwide.
1957-58 Asian flu. Moderately severe, caused about 70.000 U.S. deaths and 1-2 million deaths worldwide.
1968-69 Hong Kong flu. Least severe, caused at least 34,000 U.S. deaths, about the same as occurs in a typical flu season

Glossary
This section provides explanations of many terms used throughout the site.
antiviral: drugs that are used to prevent or cure a disease caused by a virus by interfering with the ability of the virus to multiply
avian flu: a highly contagious influenza virus that occurs naturally among wild birds which often spread to domestic fowl and can sometimes effect other animals and humans
contagious: easily spread by contact
epidemic: a disease which spreads rapidly among many people in a community, region or country
H5N1:A type of avian influenza. It was first identified in Italy in the early 1900s and is now known to exist worldwide.
influenza: a respiratory illness caused by a virus
mutation: a sudden change or variation in form
pandemic flu: a virulent human flu that spreads easily from person to person and causes a global outbreak of serious illness clearly above normal levels
pathogenic: capable of causing disease
seasonal flu: the type of human influenza which circulates each year. Also known as winter flu or common flu. Most people have some immunity and new vaccine is produced each year.
vaccine: any preparation which is used to produce antibodies that can provide immunity to a specific disease-causing organism
virulent: highly infectious; a virus that causes severe illness and is rapid in its course
virus: any of a group of small infective agents that can cause disease; unable to replicate without a host
waterfowl: a bird that swims or lives near water, including ducks, geese and swans
