Overview

It is important for business owners and leaders to be knowledgeable about the risks associated with the threat of an influenza pandemic and, in turn, to be prepared for the significant social and economic impact that might result. Among the steps business can take to prepare:

· Identify a pandemic coordinator or team with defined roles and responsibilities for preparedness

· Identify essential employees, functions and processes (including raw materials, suppliers, sub-contractors) that would be needed to maintain business operations during a pandemic

· Plan for as much as a 40 percent reduction in staff during the pandemic, as some employees might be sick while others will need to stay home to care for a sick relative or a child sent home after their school has closed

· Train and prepare all ancillary workforce (retirees, employees in other job titles, etc.). Develop a plan for scenarios likely to result in an increase or decrease in products or services during a pandemic, such as the effect of restriction on mass gatherings and the need for hygienic supplies.
